The Heavy Jets are closely connected to Newcastle’s local rock scene, with roots in Byker and a history built around writing, rehearsing and playing together in the city. That local background is part of the band’s identity rather than an incidental detail.
The December 2026 tribute show at The Grove brought that history back into focus, with The Heavy Jets joining BIG FIGURE for a night dedicated to Matty Johnson. The event was framed as a celebration of the songs, memories and friendships the musicians had built together, with proceeds going to CALM.
That connection to Byker, shared stages and long-standing musical friendships gives The Heavy Jets a clear place in Newcastle’s rock story. The project is best understood through that local history and the live relationships around it rather than through a heavily polished public image.
