The Candlelight format strips some of cinema’s biggest scores back to a string quartet and places the musicians among the familiar sea of candles. At St Mary’s, that should be particularly effective: the Grade I-listed former church sits beside the Tyne and brings stone arches and a historic interior to music originally written for some enormous films.

Fever’s current programme reaches across Zimmer’s film career rather than concentrating on one franchise. It includes Time from Inception, This Land from The Lion King, music from Gladiator, Interstellar, Dune, The Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, Sherlock Holmes and more.
The performance lasts around 60 minutes and the current Newcastle/Gateshead listing names Bloomsbury Music as the string quartet. Doors open before the concert and late entry isn’t permitted, so this is one where arriving in good time matters rather more than it might at a conventional standing gig.
There’s plenty of contrast in the set. Time and Cornfield Chase are built around gradual repetition and atmosphere, while the Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean material gives the quartet something much more dramatic to work with. Hearing those pieces without a cinema sound system puts the melodies and arrangements under a different spotlight.
The event is for ages eight and over, with under-16s required to attend with an adult. St Mary’s is wheelchair accessible, and seating is allocated within ticket zones on a first-come basis.
