Joe Webb at The Glasshouse | Gateshead Gig Preview
Joe Webb brings new album Neath Beat to The Glasshouse Gateshead on 4 March 2027 following his Mercury Prize-shortlisted 2025 record.
Welsh pianist Joe Webb brings his new album Neath Beat to The Glasshouse in Gateshead on Thursday 4 March 2027, continuing a rapid rise that saw his previous record Hamstrings & Hurricanes shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. The Sage Two date places Webb’s trio at the closing end of the venue’s newly announced jazz programme, with a live set rooted in swing but shaped by a distinctly contemporary energy.

Webb’s playing draws heavily on jazz piano tradition without sounding like a museum piece, using rhythmic drive and a strong melodic instinct to keep the music moving forward. The trio setting gives that approach plenty of space, particularly when the arrangements move between tightly structured passages and more spontaneous interaction.

The Mercury Prize recognition brought a much wider audience to Webb’s work, but the Gateshead show arrives with new music rather than simply extending the life of the shortlisted album. Neath Beat therefore gives the performance a fresh centre of gravity and makes the date part of the next stage of his development.
Sage Two is well suited to a pianist whose live appeal depends on both precision and momentum. Audiences should be close enough to catch the detail in the playing while the room still allows the trio to generate the kind of rhythmic lift that has helped Webb connect with listeners beyond traditional jazz circles.
