Plug In Maybe at The Cluny: Muse without the stadium distance
The trio build their set around multiple eras of Muse, reaching from Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry through Absolution and beyond. That gives them one of the more technically demanding catalogues in modern rock to work with: huge guitar sounds, elastic bass lines, piano, electronics and abrupt dynamic shifts all have to land convincingly.
Plug In Maybe go beyond simply playing the songs. Their production uses synced lighting, visuals, live cameras and stage dressing to recreate some of the atmosphere associated with Muse’s arena shows. In a smaller venue that becomes a different kind of spectacle, with the visual elements pushed almost directly into the audience.
The strongest part of the concept is the contrast in scale. Muse built much of their reputation on shows designed for arenas and stadiums, but the early records came from a much rawer live environment. The Cluny offers a chance to bring both sides together: the precision and visual ambition of the later tours with the pressure of a compact rock room.
For fans who know the catalogue well, the appeal should also come from hearing how songs from different periods sit beside each other. The band’s sound has changed dramatically over time, but the theatrical instinct and oversized melody have remained constant.
