NEW SINGLE ‘META’ BY NEWCASTLE’S PEARLY GATES

Pearly Gates is the electronic solo project of Newcastle’s Tom Hunt. With a sound that sits between live performance and ambient electronic soundscapes, he gradually dissipates atmospheric textures across the dancefloor. Supported by BBC Introducing and BBC Radio 6 Music, where his track Hadley received radio play, Tom is quickly establishing himself as one of the North-East’s most exciting emerging acts. Following a recent headline show at the Newcastle University Students’ Union, alongside a live band, he continues to build momentum, curating live sets that immerse any room into a shared sense of transcendent release.

Upcoming single META arrives as an introduction into the newly curated world of Pearly Gates: overstimulated, emotionally flattened, and still somehow searching for connection.

The track exists in a hypermodern world of its own, chemically clean, overproduced, and slightly detached from reality. The synths and vocal effects create a sense of artificiality that flattens the humanity of certain lines, which materialise within the irony and emotional disassociation of the songs lyrics.

THE STORY 

META is Tom’s ‘TEDx Talk on the internet’. 

‘Everyone is constantly overanalysing themselves, consuming endless advice, endless discourse, endless content, endless influence, everyone knows why they’re unhappy now, but that awareness never translates into actually feeling better or more connected with others. The song feels like cracking a joke at the exact moment you’re falling apart. The verses are somewhat observational, detached, and overstimulated, but the bridge accidentally tells you the truth. The song’s really about loneliness disguised as media literacy, which is quite funny, and bleak.’ (Tom).
