The Air Loom Gang at The Lubber Fiend: ritual, improvisation and warped electronics
The Air Loom Gang make their debut appearance with a setup built around improvisation, text-based game music and a deliberately unstable approach to instrumentation. Their current configuration brings together Sam Spencer-Whitbread, Louis Clarke, James Clay, Ant Macari and Oliver Davies, using a mixture of traditional instruments, unusual handmade tools and synthesised sound.
The group describe the result as ritualistic and confrontational, with sound treated less like a fixed composition and more like a material that can be bent, filtered and repurposed in real time. That should fit The Lubber Fiend particularly well, where experimental sets can work at close range without needing to be translated into a conventional stage format.
Drooping Finger, the solo project of Jonas Halsall, takes a different route into abstraction. His recordings are built from rattling domestic sounds, samples and carefully assembled textures, turning ordinary mechanical noise into something tense and immersive.
Dawn Bothwell adds another contrast. Known for work with Hen Ogledd, Pentecostal Party and OPH, she will perform a new solo set using synthesisers, drum machines, effects, vocals, spoken word and more rhythmic material.
DJ Lee Baby Sims completes the night with both sound and visuals, including analogue animation and archival footage. That gives the bill a broader audiovisual shape rather than leaving the projections as background decoration.
