Around About Dusk at Cluny 2: old-world sounds without nostalgia
The five-piece draw from a broad set of traditions but avoid sounding like a museum piece. Chanson, early jazz, European folk and old-time music sit beside rich vocal harmonies and eclectic instrumentation, giving the songs a handmade quality without locking them into one period.
The project grew from travel, busking and small-scale performances across Europe and New Orleans, and that background still shapes the music. The arrangements feel designed to work in close contact with an audience, whether on a street corner, around a campfire or inside a venue like Cluny 2.
Their songs often lean into folklore, nature and slightly macabre storytelling, creating an atmosphere that can move from playful to eerie without becoming heavy-handed. That gives the band a distinctive character compared with more straightforward folk or jazz acts.
Around About Dusk have already picked up attention from BBC Radio 6 Music and Fresh On The Net and were shortlisted for the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award in November 2025. Their debut album Sweet Old Fables arrived in March 2026, expanding the core group with guest musicians and vocalists.
Festival appearances at Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival, Bristol Folk Festival and Secret Garden Party, alongside European touring, have given the group plenty of experience adapting their music to different spaces. Cluny 2 should bring the emphasis back to intimacy and detail.
