Billy Lockett at Cluny 2: songs shaped by change

Lockett’s career has moved through several distinct phases without losing the piano at its centre. Early Radio 1 support and tours with Birdy, Lana Del Rey and KT Tunstall established him as a singer-songwriter, but personal loss and major changes in direction repeatedly reshaped the path that followed.

After returning home following the death of his father, he spent long periods writing and rebuilding. That process eventually led to more headline shows, tours with Lewis Capaldi and Electric Light Orchestra and a run of releases that moved between pop songwriting and modern classical piano.

The contrast is part of what makes his catalogue interesting. Lockett has had piano-only music played on Classic FM while also appearing on a drum and bass track receiving Radio 1 airplay. Rather than keeping those worlds separate, his songwriting has increasingly treated them as different parts of the same career.

His Reset and Reflections EPs documented a period of recovery and reassessment, while debut album Abington Grove was recorded in the basement of his late father’s house. That personal setting gives the record a direct connection to the experiences that shaped it.

Cluny 2 should suit material built around voice, piano and storytelling. The room keeps the audience close enough for quieter songs to carry their full weight without needing to be inflated for a larger stage.
