Hyperreal at Cluny 2: synth-pop, shoegaze and gospel lift
Hyperreal’s sound is built around excess in the best sense. Shoegaze guitars, dream-pop textures, bright synthesisers and psychedelic soul are pushed together with Black gospel harmonies, creating music that aims for uplift rather than understatement.
The band’s rhythm section adds another layer, with Afro-futurist ideas, a female drummer and African percussion helping the music avoid settling into a standard synth-rock shape. That means the live show has both density and movement, with the choir-like vocal arrangements sitting over a rhythm section designed to keep the songs physical.
This return to Cluny 2 follows an earlier euphoric appearance in the room and arrives with a new five-song EP, What Makes You You Is Your Superpower. The title captures the band’s wider message: difference, individuality and refusing to flatten yourself to fit expectations.
That theme could easily become overearnest, but the band’s approach is deliberately colourful and celebratory. The point is to make outsiders feel included by turning the room into something bigger and brighter than everyday life for an hour.
Gram Gram adds another element to the bill, while Cluny 2’s intimacy should magnify the vocal harmonies and the contrast between the band’s huge sonic ambitions and the size of the room.
