Gwenifer Raymond at Cluny 2: folk tradition turned strange

Raymond has become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary finger-picked guitar, taking ideas associated with Mississippi blues and John Fahey’s American Primitive tradition and rerouting them through her own Welsh background, folk horror and avant-garde interests.

That mixture has led to the description “Welsh Primitive”, but the music is more than a genre label. Her pieces can feel ancient and futuristic at the same time, combining physical technique with a sense of unease and space that makes the instrument feel much larger than one player.

Her third studio album Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark arrived in September 2025 and pushed that approach further. The record was followed by international recognition, including a Tiny Desk concert, a KEXP session and appearances at Primavera Sound and Newport Folk Festival.

She has also toured with Geese and The Tallest Man On Earth and appeared on dates with Mitski, including at the Royal Albert Hall. Those larger stages have widened her audience, but Cluny 2 may be a better place to hear the detail that makes the music work.

With Raymond now signed to Fat Possum and further new music and reissues planned, the Newcastle show lands during a particularly active period rather than functioning as a retrospective stop.
