More Jam Brings Experienced Jazz Musicians to The Globe Newcastle

More Jam takes over The Globe in Newcastle on Sunday 27 September 2026 for a free-entry afternoon of jazz, with the session advertised from 2pm to 5pm. Musicians are welcome to join the playing, and visitors can also drop in simply to listen. This is the venue’s fourth-Sunday jam, aimed at instrumentalists and vocalists with more experience of playing jazz standards in a shared session.

The Globe provides a house trio to keep the music moving as different musicians take turns. The advertised repertoire is drawn mostly from Real Book jazz standards, giving participants a common collection of tunes to work from. Playing in a jam means listening as closely as performing: a singer might lead one number, a horn player the next, and the rhythm section has to respond as the line-up changes. That give-and-take is a significant part of what makes More Jam different from a fixed trio concert.

Anyone new to jazz sessions should note the distinction between this event and Am Jam. The Globe’s Am Jam, normally held on the second Sunday, is designed to encourage players who have not done many jams before. More Jam is the option for more confident musicians who already know the conventions of sharing solos and working through jazz standards with people they may not have rehearsed with previously. Both sessions are open to listeners, so you do not need an instrument to come along.

The afternoon is intended to be informal, rather than a competition or an audition. The house trio creates a musical base, but the actual combination of players and choice of tunes will depend on who attends on the day. A visitor can hear several approaches to familiar jazz material in the space of three hours, while a participating musician has the chance to play alongside others from the local scene.
