Table Of Content
Released in 1997, New Forms pushed drum and bass into a wider spotlight, collecting the Mercury Music Prize and showing just how far the genre could travel beyond its club roots. Thirty years on, the record remains a landmark, and the anniversary tour gives North East audiences a chance to experience the music live.
Roni Size & Reprazent celebrate New Forms in Newcastle
Roni Size helped take the sound of Bristol’s underground to an international audience, blending breakbeats, deep basslines and musical arrangements into something distinctive. Reprazent’s debut album brought together the excitement of club culture with a broader sense of space and melody. Brown Paper Bag remains one of the best-known tracks associated with the project, but the album’s influence extends well beyond one song.
The anniversary marks three decades since a record that helped redefine perceptions of drum and bass. It also arrives at a time when new generations of listeners continue to discover the style through clubs, festivals and contemporary electronic music. The Newcastle show should appeal to fans who remember the album’s arrival as well as those experiencing the music live for the first time.
Joining Roni Size & Reprazent are Fabio & Grooverider, two of the DJs most closely associated with the development of jungle and drum and bass in the UK. Their partnership dates back to the late 1980s, with influential club residencies and radio work helping shape the wider scene. Their presence makes this more than an album-anniversary set: it is a line-up featuring artists who were central to the music’s evolution.
