Single Review: DOG DAYS ‘Starting Again’

Quintessential 2000s indie with a singer who sounds like Lucy Dacus – what a combo.

DOG DAYS have released a song that would’ve made it straight onto my iPod playlist as a teenager. It’s called ‘Starting Again’, and it features shoegaze-heavy guitar full of teenage angst alongside light, whimsical vocals.

Aged between 16 and 18, the Newcastle four-piece only started releasing music this year. They’ve got another song called ‘Petals’, which I hope they also submit for review because I really like it!

Back to this song, though. ‘Starting Again’ opens with just the bassline – again, one that feels like it was ripped right from the 2000s. It definitely gives me a flicker of nostalgia before the rest of the track starts to build around it.

“There’s bolts and screws in my head, I think it’s starting again.”

Being that young and not having a clue who you are or how the world works is an all-too-familiar feeling for a lot of people. That makes this song highly relatable, tapping into a pretty universal human experience while again hitting on that nostalgic feeling.

I think you should really keep an eye on this band, so long as they keep writing songs like this.
