Castillo Nuevo Orquesta are a North East-based live salsa project with a regular presence on Newcastle stages. Their music moves through Afro-Cuban styles, Latin jazz, salsa, bossa nova, Cuban lounge and mambo, with modern soul and funk also finding their way into the set.
Trombonist and music educator Dr Jason Holcomb is one of the musicians connected with the project, and his performance work around Newcastle reflects the group’s wider place in the city’s Latin and jazz scene. The emphasis is firmly on live ensemble playing, with rhythm and brass giving the music the energy it needs in a busy room.
Recurring appearances at Pilgrim have made Castillo Nuevo Orquesta a familiar part of the Newcastle live calendar rather than a one-off booking. Their mix of Afro-Cuban rhythm, jazz colour and dancefloor momentum gives the city something different from the usual guitar-led grassroots bill.
