The Smokin’ Spitfires are a Newcastle-based, horn-driven soul and R&B band built around Neil Hunter’s songwriting and vocals. Their sound combines original material with the punch of classic rhythm and blues, using a full brass section to give the songs extra weight on stage.
Influences including Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and James Brown run through the band’s approach, but the group are more than a covers act. Their own songs sit comfortably within the same broad soul tradition, carried by experienced North East musicians and a live setup designed for energy rather than restraint.
The Smokin’ Spitfires have become a familiar presence on the regional circuit, including regular appearances at The Cluny and The Globe. Their long-running charity work for The Bubble Foundation has also become part of the band’s identity, with selected shows using the live set to raise money for the cause.
