The Big Family Festive Gig returns to The Glasshouse on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December, giving younger music fans a Christmas show where sitting perfectly still isn’t really the point.

Taking place in the Northern Rock Foundation Hall, the weekend is designed as a family-friendly live music experience rather than a formal concert, making it a handy option for anyone who wants to get children involved in the festive programme.

A Christmas gig for the whole family

Family concerts work best when they don’t feel like an adult show with a few concessions made for children. The Big Family Festive Gig puts families at the centre from the start, with the atmosphere of a live gig and enough Christmas spirit to make the timing feel right.

The smaller hall also makes sense. Rather than dropping young audiences into the scale of Sage One, the Northern Rock Foundation Hall can make the whole thing feel more immediate and less intimidating.

It arrives during a run that includes Jess Gillam Ensemble before it and Kate Rusby’s Christmas show just after, while the venue’s film concerts continue later in December. So there are plenty of options if you’re trying to build a festive day around the Quayside.

For parents looking for something musical that isn’t another trip to see Santa, this should be worth a look.
