Kate Rusby’s Christmas show has become a festive tradition in its own right, and she’s bringing it back to Sage One at The Glasshouse on Monday 14 December.

Rusby has spent years digging into old South Yorkshire Christmas songs and giving them new life alongside her own material. The result is a seasonal show that feels rooted in folk tradition without turning into the same collection of Christmas standards you hear everywhere else.

Part of the charm is that Rusby’s Christmas repertoire has its own character. These are songs with regional histories, different melodies and a sense of place, all filtered through one of the most recognisable voices in British folk.

There’s usually plenty of warmth and humour around the music too. That matters with a Christmas show — nobody really wants two hours that feel overly reverent in mid-December — and Rusby has always been good at making a large room feel relaxed.

Sage One gives the arrangements room to open up, while the timing puts the show right in the heart of The Glasshouse’s festive run. Scottish Christmas Songbook follows the next night, with Sinfonia of London and Matt Baker continuing the programme later that week.

If Kate Rusby at Christmas is already part of your December routine, you probably don’t need convincing. If it isn’t, this Gateshead date is a good chance to find out why people keep coming back.
