If your Christmas playlist regularly drifts into West End territory, Christmas at the Musicals is heading to Sage One on Wednesday 9 December.

The show brings together favourite songs from some of musical theatre’s best-loved productions, wrapping them into a big festive night at The Glasshouse.

West End favourites meet Christmas in Gateshead

Musical theatre already knows how to do big choruses, big emotions and the occasional shameless key change, so adding Christmas into the mix feels fairly natural. This is a show for people who want recognisable songs and a bit of spectacle rather than a formal seasonal concert.

Sage One is a good fit for that kind of night. The hall can handle the bigger vocal moments while still giving the songs enough clarity to stop everything becoming one long wall of sound.

The concert lands in the middle of a particularly busy run at The Glasshouse, following Rhiannon Giddens on 8 December and ahead of Jess Gillam Ensemble on the 10th. It’s one of the clearest examples of how broad the venue’s December programme is this year.

For musical fans, though, the appeal doesn’t really need overcomplicating: a night of songs you know, a proper concert hall and Christmas just over two weeks away.
