De’Sean Jones at The Cluny: Detroit tradition pushed forward
Jones arrives with a musical background that cuts across jazz, electronic music and large-ensemble arranging. A Detroit School of Arts alumnus, he has built a career around composition as much as instrumental firepower, while maintaining close links with the city’s wider creative culture.
His work has included membership of Detroit electronic collective Underground Resistance and leadership of the Urban Art Orchestra. That combination gives the Newcastle show an unusually broad palette: improvisation and groove sit alongside the disciplined shape of arranged music, with Jones’ saxophone acting as the point where those approaches meet.
The Cluny already knows what he can do. The venue is bringing him back after an earlier appearance made a strong impression, and the smaller room should suit music that depends on interaction as much as volume. Rather than a distant stage show, this is the sort of set where changes in tone, rhythm and dynamics can be felt close up.
Jones has also worked with artists including Stevie Wonder, The Clark Sisters and Faith Evans, but the attraction here is not a list of past collaborations. It is the chance to hear a player rooted in Detroit’s musical history continuing to pull those influences into something current.
