SOAK at The Cluny: from debut breakthrough to a fourth album
SOAK’s 2015 debut Before We Forgot How to Dream arrived with unusual weight behind it. The album won both the Choice Music Prize and Northern Ireland Music Prize and earned a Mercury Music Prize nomination, introducing a songwriter able to make intimate material feel expansive without losing its detail.
Follow-up records Grim Town and If I Never Know You Like This Again pushed that writing through different textures while keeping the emotional directness intact. Extensive touring has followed, including appearances at Glastonbury, SXSW, Primavera and Other Voices, alongside shows with artists including Julien Baker, Modest Mouse and Lucy Dacus.
The Newcastle date arrives around decembers, SOAK’s fourth album. That makes this more than a retrospective set built around the songs that first broke through. The Cluny should give newer material a close, concentrated setting where subtle shifts in arrangement and vocal delivery can land without being swallowed by a larger room.
SOAK’s strongest work has often balanced understatement with scale: songs can begin in a private space and gradually open out without becoming overworked. That tension should suit The Cluny particularly well, giving the audience a chance to hear both the quieter details and the moments where the music lifts.
