Helicon at The Cluny: psychedelic rock without fixed borders
Formed by brothers John-Paul and Gary Hughes in East Kilbride, Helicon have spent their career widening the definition of psychedelic rock. Rather than treating the style as a 1960s recreation, they pull in electronic textures, global influences, sitar and long-form atmosphere to create something heavier and more modern.
The band signed to Fuzz Club in 2017 and have since released three studio albums alongside live records, EPs and standalone singles. Their work has also brought collaborations with figures including Tony Doogan, Will Carruthers, Mark Gardener and producer Al Lover, while BBC Radio 6 Music has given the group wider exposure.
Kavus Torabi makes the bill especially interesting. His work stretches from The Utopia Strong and Knifeworld to Gong, Cardiacs, Guapo and The Holy Family, but his solo music draws those strands together into something more intimate and ritualistic. Guitar, harmonium, synthesiser and voice become tools for songs that can move from confession to cosmic abstraction without sounding forced.
That pairing gives the Newcastle show two different routes into psychedelia. Helicon approach it through groove, repetition and scale; Torabi can reduce the same sense of strangeness into a more personal form. In The Cluny, where detail and volume sit close together, the contrast should work particularly well.
