Polyvinyl’s new single “Bad Dreams” feels like another important piece of Where This Ends, but not in an overblown way. It just sounds like a track that knows where it sits. There is still plenty of atmosphere in it, still that sense that the band are building something bigger around this EP, but this one seems to hit a bit more directly.
The band describe “Bad Dreams” as being about “the willful art of forgetting”. That is really the centre of it. It looks at the point where something once shared starts to slip away, and a person who used to be part of everyday life ends up feeling more like a memory than anything real. It is not especially sentimental in the way that is framed either. It feels more tied to distance, fog, and the effort of trying to clear some room in your own head.
That comes through even more in how Polyvinyl talk about turning a living trauma into something distant enough to manage. That is probably the strongest thing about the song on paper. It is not about pretending something never happened. It is more about trying to shrink its hold a bit. Make it smaller. Push it further back. That gives “Bad Dreams” a weight that fits naturally with the wider Where This Ends idea.

Polyvinyl say this is their most radio-friendly single yet, which is interesting because the meaning behind it still sounds pretty heavy. But maybe that is what makes it work. They are not ditching the darker side of what they do. It sounds more like they have found a way to make it come through in a clearer, more immediate way. The focus on atmosphere and repetition makes sense with that as well. It suggests a track that stays with a feeling rather than trying to rush past it.
That is probably where “Bad Dreams” lands best. It sounds like a song that can stand on its own, but it still feels part of something bigger. Polyvinyl have been clear all along that Where This Ends is meant to feel like a full piece of work rather than a handful of separate tracks, and this seems to carry that on properly. It adds to the mood of the record and gives another look at a band who seem to know themselves a bit better with each release.
If Where This Ends is meant to show where Polyvinyl are at right now, “Bad Dreams” feels like a strong part of that picture.
“Bad Dreams” is out on 24 April 2026. Polyvinyl’s EP Where This Ends follows on 8 May 2026.
