Phantom Bagman are a North East-based indie-jazz group who bring together jazz musicianship with the punch and immediacy of indie rock, funk and soul. The band began as a group of university friends and gradually expanded into a seven-piece ensemble of players with different musical backgrounds, giving the project a broader palette than the name alone might suggest.

The current line-up includes Siena Anderson on vocals, Ben Tattersall and Dom Purefoy on trumpets, Luke Carey on guitar, Matty Turnbull on piano, Jamie Watkins on bass and Matt Brown on drums. That instrumentation gives Phantom Bagman plenty of room to shift between groove-led sections, brass-heavy arrangements and more melodic indie moments without losing the live energy at the centre of the project.

A sound built from jazz, funk and indie rock

Gosforth Civic Theatre describes the band as fusing indie rock, funk and soul with modern jazz aesthetics, which is a fair summary of the way the music works. The rhythm section gives the songs a strong groove, while the brass and piano add colour that pushes the arrangements beyond a standard guitar-band setup. Venues including Pilgrim, The Globe and Little Buildings have all featured in their schedule, while an appearance at The Glasshouse through BBC Introducing North East marked an important step up in profile. They have also headlined Aelius Rising at The Globe and appeared on local showcase bills built around emerging regional talent.

The band’s North East identity is part of the project rather than an afterthought. Their own story is tied to the city that brought the members together, and the current live circuit around Newcastle has given them space to keep developing the sound in front of audiences.
