Sunderland city centre is set for a packed weekend of free music, performances and family-friendly activity as One Big Summer launches across Keel Square and High Street West.
Running from Friday 22 May to Sunday 24 May 2026, the three-day programme is being framed as a celebration of creativity, culture and community, with live music, dance, spoken word, pop-up performances, workshops, installations and hands-on activities taking place in the heart of the city. MySunderland describes the launch weekend as a free event created “by the community, for the community”, with a focus on Sunderland’s home-grown talent and cultural groups.
It also gives the city centre its own spotlight during a weekend when a lot of attention will naturally be on bigger events elsewhere. This is a chance to experience something a bit different — and, just as importantly, to help shine a light on the local artists, performers and community groups that make Sunderland what it is.
The weekend begins on Friday 22 May with a Live Music Showcase at Keel Square, running from 4pm to 9.30pm. The event is built around emerging local talent, with performers listed including Isabel Maria, NAME, The Bunker and Sunderland College. MySunderland says the showcase highlights the journey from grassroots artists through to college-level performers and early professional musicians, giving them the opportunity to perform in a city centre setting.

That feels like the real heart of the Friday night. It is not just about putting a stage in the square. It is about giving younger and developing artists a proper platform, in public, in front of new people, with the city moving around them. For anyone who talks about supporting local music, these are the kinds of events where that support actually starts to matter.
On Saturday 23 May, the focus widens into a full day of Live Entertainment and Family Activities, running from 11.30am to 9.30pm across Keel Square and High Street West. The day will bring together live music, choirs, dance, theatre, visual arts, interactive music-making, samba drumming, circus skills, arts and crafts, creative market stalls, pop-up galleries and community cultural showcases.
The Keel Square stage line-up includes Hyper Best, Nrthrn Baby, King Inc, Mandeep Dance Academy, Houghton Brass, Autism Able, Rock Choir, Northern Daughters, Absolute Cabaret and Bojangle Ukes. Over on the High Street West stage, the programme includes Jack Drum Arts, Sunderland for Ukraine, After Evensong, New Eye, Ryhope Choir, Fortissimo, Absolute Show Choir and Sunderland College.

There will also be plenty happening away from the stage. Keel Square activities include Circurama, Waves Activities, The Moon Booth, Equinox Archways, Derevelation Studios, Sacred Sounds and Drummed Up and Aria Art. On High Street West, activities include Back Beat Samba, Atlas Theatre Company, Pink-Collar Gallery, Back on the Map, Culture Declares Emergency, Bee Enchanted and Namaste Nima.
One of the more unusual parts of the Saturday programme is the chance to get involved in Northern Daughters’ music video while you are there. That gives the day a slightly different feel from a standard city centre event. It is not all passive watching. There are workshops, creative sessions and moments where visitors can properly step into what is happening.

The launch weekend continues on Sunday 24 May with a relaxed Big Weekend watch party in Sunderland city centre, bringing people together to enjoy headline sets in a more laid-back, social setting. Full details for the Sunday watch-along are still to be confirmed.
Taken together, One Big Summer Launch Weekend looks less like one single event and more like a snapshot of Sunderland’s creative life: musicians, choirs, students, dancers, artists, theatre groups, community organisations and families all sharing the same city centre spaces.
For SoundBite, the Friday live music showcase is the obvious pull — especially with The Bunker and Sunderland College involved — but the wider weekend matters too. These are the kinds of events that help make local culture visible. Not hidden away. Not just for people already in the know. Right there in the middle of Sunderland, free to walk into.
One Big Summer Launch Weekend takes place from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 May 2026 at Keel Square and High Street West, Sunderland.
