Headcage and their Newcastle roots
Headcage are a post-hardcore band formed in Newcastle upon Tyne, bringing together the weight of modern heavy music with the kind of melody that gives their songs room to stick. Their sound is built around bone-crunching riffs, sharp dynamic shifts and soaring vocal lines, but the band avoid becoming predictable by allowing quieter sections and more atmospheric ideas to sit alongside the heavier moments.
That balance is central to what makes Headcage work. The songs carry clear influences from post-hardcore, alternative rock and emo, yet the band have developed a contemporary take on those sounds rather than simply recreating a particular era. The guitars are dense when they need to be, the rhythm section keeps everything moving and the melodic side of the writing gives the heavier sections more impact when they arrive.
A growing catalogue of Newcastle post-hardcore
Headcage have built their catalogue through a steady run of singles and EP material. Tracks including side by side, gaslight, false gold, nothing, shrink, ruins and the under my skin EP established the band’s early identity, while newer songs such as like glass, blackdog and deadstill have continued to refine the mix of melody and aggression.
The newer material feels increasingly confident, particularly in the way the band move between tension and release. Rather than keeping every track at maximum intensity, Headcage make use of contrast. That gives the choruses more lift, allows the vocals to carry more emotion and makes the heavier sections feel earned rather than constant.
Headcage on the North East live circuit
Newcastle remains at the centre of the band’s identity. Headcage formed in the city and have developed through the North East’s grassroots network of alternative venues and promoters, appearing on bills that bring together rock, post-hardcore and heavier emerging acts. SoundBite North East has featured the band through Veritas Festival coverage, placing them alongside a broad cross-section of current regional guitar music.
For listeners who like alternative rock with real weight but still want memorable melodies, Headcage are an easy band to understand quickly. Their Newcastle roots, growing catalogue and increasingly assured songwriting make them one of the stronger names within the city’s current post-hardcore scene, with enough range in their sound to push beyond the region as the project develops.
