Chumpwrecker and North East electronic music

Chumpwrecker is the breakcore and drum & bass project of North East electronic musician Ian Hanratty. The project is built around hardware-only live performance, using synths and samplers rather than a laptop or DAW on stage.

That approach gives Chumpwrecker a deliberately raw feel. Breakcore, drum & bass, distortion and twisted synth textures are assembled live, so the set can shift and change in real time rather than following a fixed backing track. The result is intense electronic music with the unpredictability of a live band.

The Forum Music Centre has included Chumpwrecker on an all-North East heavy and experimental bill alongside Old Corpse Road and Fateweaver. It is an unusual combination on paper, but the project’s aggressive rhythms and hardware-driven sound make sense next to metal and other heavier styles.

For SoundBite North East, Chumpwrecker stands out because the project expands the idea of what a local live act can look like. Rather than fitting into the usual guitar-band format, Ian Hanratty uses electronic hardware as the performance itself, building beats, distortion and synth lines in front of the audience.

That makes Chumpwrecker part of the wider North East alternative scene while still occupying a very different space sonically. The project connects breakcore and drum & bass with the energy of grassroots live music, giving electronic music a physical, performance-led edge.
