Strictly Smokin’ Big Band are a Newcastle-rooted big band whose music reaches from classic swing into original and contemporary jazz. Founded by musical director Michael Lamb, the ensemble has spent more than two decades developing large-scale live shows, recordings and collaborations.
Their work goes well beyond a straightforward standards set, combining carefully arranged big-band music with guest artists, new writing and themed concert programmes. Recent recording sessions in Newcastle have kept the project closely connected to the region while the band continues exploring a broader contemporary repertoire.
Seasonal shows and major Newcastle appearances have become an important part of the calendar, including Christmas programmes at venues such as City Hall and Pilgrim. The scale of the ensemble gives those performances a sense of occasion while keeping the musicianship at the centre.
