Single Review: Heidi Curtis ‘Summon’
Sam Heppenstall reviews Heidi Curtis’s new single ‘Summon’, a ferocious and empowering track driven by massive drums and soaring vocals.
Heidi Curtis’s latest single, ‘Summon’, is the title track from her upcoming EP of the same name. It’s a song about backing yourself and finding confidence and strength when a situation feels overwhelming.
In her own words, Curtis explained that writing the track made her question her power as a woman in music and confront the discomfort of feeling too loud or too grand. ‘Summon’ reignited a strength she had forgotten and reminded her not to be afraid of creating ferocious music.
And let me tell you, this song is ferocious. It doesn’t let up and barely gives you time to catch your breath before you’re smacked in the face by outstanding vocals and massive drums.
Lyrically, I feel as though the song takes on the shape of someone starting to truly realise their worth. The lyric about going out tonight with a new head on their shoulders and burning through a brand-new set of burdens feels particularly relatable. It offers optimism where there is none.
My God, let’s talk more about the vocals. The delicate head voice in the pre-chorus and bridge contrasts with the wrecking ball of a chorus, smashing through the instrumentation and stopping you in your tracks. Dynamically, this track is an absolute 10/10 if you like relentless, empowering rock music. Heidi absolutely kills it with this one.
