Speaking in Tongues Bring Talking Heads Show to Wylam
Speaking in Tongues make their Wylam Brewery debut on 30 May 2027 with a live Talking Heads show shaped by Stop Making Sense and the band's classic albums.

Speaking in Tongues Newcastle comes to Wylam Brewery on Sunday 30 May 2027 for the band’s first appearance at the Palace of Arts. The Bristol-based group has spent more than two decades building a live show around Talking Heads at their most adventurous, with doors opening at 7pm for the 18+ Bank Holiday date.
Speaking in Tongues Newcastle reaches Wylam for the first time
The debut matters because this is a production that has already had years to develop elsewhere. The Wylam date is the band’s debut at the Palace of Arts after more than 20 years recreating the live peak of Talking Heads from a Bristol base. Speaking in Tongues formed in 2005 and have continued refining the show rather than treating it as a short-term tribute project.
The reference point is not only the studio singles. Their performance is heavily shaped by Stop Making Sense, the concert film that captured Talking Heads turning a carefully staged build-up into a full-band spectacle. Material from Fear of Music and Remain in Light also gives the set room to explore the rhythmic and experimental side of the catalogue.
That makes Wylam Brewery an interesting match. The Palace of Arts has the floor space for the show to feel physical and danceable, but it also gives the musicians enough room for the layered percussion, funk guitar and vocal interplay that define many of the songs.
The event is a standing show, which should help retain the movement that is central to the source material. A seated theatre format can work for a tribute, but Talking Heads’ peak live identity was built around rhythm and momentum, so the Wylam setup feels closer to that spirit.
For Newcastle audiences, the useful distinction is that Speaking in Tongues are not simply playing a sequence of recognisable choruses. The show is designed around the live language of the original band, particularly the period when those songs became bigger and stranger on stage.
Speaking in Tongues play Wylam Brewery on Sunday 30 May 2027. Doors open at 7pm and the event is 18+. Check the band and Wylam Brewery before travelling for any late changes.
