The Often Herd are a Newcastle upon Tyne bluegrass band whose songs carry a strong North East sense of place. Their writing draws on personal experience as well as the natural and industrial landscapes around Tyneside, giving their acoustic sound a regional character even as the music looks towards American bluegrass traditions.
Guitarist Rupert Hughes and mandolin player Evan Davies are the band’s principal songwriters, joined by fiddle player Niles Krieger and bassist Sam Quintana. Together they combine close harmonies with precise, energetic playing, balancing traditional bluegrass craft with contemporary songwriting.
Their debut album, Where the Big Lamp Shines, arrived in 2022, while 2026 brought the singles Cool Summer Rain and Remember My Name, both recorded at Blank Studios in Newcastle. The band have also taken that North East-rooted sound much further afield, including dates in the United States and appearances at major bluegrass events.
