North East singer-songwriter Joe Bartley is preparing to take another step forward in his live career as he headlines Cluny 2 in Newcastle on Monday 24 August.

Having previously performed at the venue, this time Bartley returns at the top of the bill, backed by a full band live for the first time. He’ll be joined on the night by fellow local artists Adam Henderson and Josh Webb, two musicians who have been part of his journey since some of his earliest experiences within the North East live music scene.
Since first starting to sing in 2023, Bartley has quickly built up experience on stages across the region, developing an energetic indie sound alongside more personal songwriting. Ahead of the Cluny 2 show, we caught up with Joe to talk about the milestone headline gig, his influences, writing original music and what audiences can expect on the night.
You’re returning to Cluny 2, but this time as the headline act. How does it feel to be reaching that milestone?
Feels amazing to be headlining such an iconic venue where I’ve seen so many bands, and played before. Hopefully should be a great night.
For anyone who hasn’t discovered your music yet, how would you describe Joe Bartley in three words?
Energetic. Indie. Honest.
When did you first realise music was something you wanted to pursue seriously, and who inspired you growing up?
Id say when I started singing in mid 2023. My first time singing in front of anyone was in the garden for my brother’s 18th. I wasn’t the best like but everyone was pissed so it didn’t matter. I took big inspiration from Sam Fender at the time and bands like Oasis when I was getting into music.
Your songs often connect with people on a personal level. When you’re writing, do the lyrics or the music usually come first?
I don’t often sit and write but when I do, I’ll always have the guitar in my hand and start strumming. I can’t write without having the music first.
You’ve built your reputation through live performances across the North East. What is it about being on stage that you enjoy the most?
I love being able to play my more personal original songs to people, hoping they connect with the songs. And I like being able to entertain audiences

This show also brings together Adam Henderson and Josh Webb. What can audiences expect from the night as a whole, and why did you want them on the bill?
Having Josh and Adam supporting is like a full circle moment for me. The first ever buskers night I went to was in Throckley hosted by Adam and Josh was playing too. So to be able to have them supporting me is amazing. They’re both great singers and songwriters and you can expect a class night of local music
Every artist has one song that means a little bit more than the rest. Is there a track you’re especially looking forward to performing at Cluny, and why?
I think ‘Lucky One’ has more of a sentimental value as it was the first ever song I wrote and has quite a deep meaning to it. So I’m looking forward to playing that. Also, a brand new song I’ve wrote called runaway too, more of an upbeat energetic song.
Away from music, what’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
Probably that I’m the pickiest eater in the world. I think anyone who knows me would agree
Once this headline show is over, what’s next? Can fans look forward to new music, more gigs or any exciting plans?
I’ve definitely got a lot of things planned. New music, exciting support slots coming up and that. But no dates confirmed yet for any new tunes
Finally, if someone is thinking about coming along to Cluny 2 on 24 August, what’s your message to them? Why should they make sure they’re there?
It’ll be the first time I ever play with a band live and the tunes have been sounding class with the lads. Also, the two supports are unbelievable so you should make sure you catch their sets in intimate venues before they both make it big. And overall it’s going to be a great night.
