Brighton indie heavyweights Opus Kink share enigmatic new effort ‘The Head Tree’ (feat. The New Eves), out today (April 29th) ahead of their debut LP ‘The Sweet Goodbye’ (pre-order here), set for release July 31st via So Recordings (Placebo, Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special).
Partnering with the esteemed folk/punk outfit The New Eves for their latest offering, ‘The Head Tree’ is emblematic of everything that’s come to be expected from the world of Opus Kink. Layered in their ever-mutating brand of jazz-and-country-laced punk, the rising six-piece once more craft a soundscape as elusive as it is recognisable.
Detailing their new release, frontman Angus Rogers explained: “In 1685 Alice Molland was the last woman to be tried and hanged as a witch in England, strung up on a ‘Head Tree’ just outside of Exeter. Now, from her burial place underneath an Aldi carpark in the town of Heavitree, she summons the spirits of her fallen sisters-in-sin – Mary Trembles, Temperance Lloyd and Susannah Edwards – as well as, for some reason, the spirit of the Bee Gees, in order to tell her tale. Uttered through the coerced mouths of Opus Kink and The New Eves.”
Through their songs concerning violence, evil, shame, troubled sexual politics, anxiety and emptiness, all served with a wry absurdist bent, Opus Kink have crafted an alluring nether-world for their voracious audiences to plunge into and attracted significant acclaim in the process. Across the press landscape, the group have been championed by the likes of The Sunday Times, The Independent, NME, Stereogum, DIY, Dork, So Young, Rolling Stone UK, Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, The Needle Drop, Under The Radar, as well as notching up three appearances on the BBC 6 Music playlist (Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Craig Charles, Huw Stephens) and countless BBC 1 Radio spins (Jack Saunders).
Primed to hit the festival circuit extensively this summer ahead of their album release, Opus Kink will follow that up with a full UK and European headline tour in the autumn (including their biggest ever headline show at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town) as they celebrate the arrival of ‘The Sweet Goodbye’.
Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer and mixer Craig Silvey (Florence & The Machine, Baxter Dury, REM, Kronos Quartet, Sam Fender) and engineer Dani Spragg (Wunderhorse, English Teacher, Black Midi), Opus Kink’s ‘The Head Tree’ (feat. The New Eves) is out now via So Recordings and available on all digital platforms.
Opus Kink is Angus Rogers (lead vocals, guitars), Sam Abbo (bass, backing vocals), Fin Abbo (drums, percussion), Jazz Pope (keys, synth, backing vocals), Jack Banjo Courtney (trumpet), Jed Morgans (saxophone)
