José Almarcha Trio Bring Contemporary Flamenco to Cluny 2

José Almarcha Trio Newcastle comes to Cluny 2 on Sunday 20 September 2026 as part of an autumn UK tour bringing contemporary flamenco directly from Spain. Doors open at 7pm for a show built around guitar, piano, drums and percussion rather than a conventional full-band rock setup.

Almarcha’s latest work places traditional flamenco language alongside the intensity of rock and the groove of soul. That mix is central to 2024 album Un nuevo paseo, which gives the Newcastle date a clear musical centre rather than presenting flamenco as a fixed heritage form.

The Cluny 2 date forms part of an eleven-concert UK run and centres on Un nuevo paseo, a record that pushes flamenco guitar towards rock intensity and soul groove without letting go of compás. That makes this a useful chance to hear how those ideas work in a small room rather than a formal concert hall.

The touring trio is José Almarcha on guitar, Andre JahJah on piano and Demi García Sabat on drums and percussion. The combination gives Almarcha more rhythmic and harmonic room than a solo recital, while still keeping the guitar at the centre of the music.

Almarcha was born in Tomelloso in Ciudad Real and studied at the Rafael Orozco Conservatoire in Córdoba under teachers including Paco Serrano, Manolo Franco and Niño de Pura. His career has since taken him to more than thirty countries, alongside collaborations and performances with figures including Carmen Linares, Javier Ruibal, Jorge Pardo and Antonio Serrano.

Cluny 2 should suit the trio particularly well. The room is intimate enough for the detail in Almarcha’s playing to register, but the addition of piano and percussion means the performance can still build beyond the dynamics of a traditional solo-guitar concert.

The Newcastle stop also arrives early in a UK route running from Chester and Nottingham through Leeds, Glasgow, London, Brighton and Cambridge. That puts The Cluny inside a concentrated touring period rather than as an isolated international date.
