Sarcófago Bring Brazilian Extreme Metal Legacy to Cluny 2

Sarcófago Newcastle comes to Cluny 2 on Wednesday 16 September 2026, bringing one of Brazilian extreme metal’s most influential names into the close quarters of Ouseburn. Damim are confirmed in support, with doors at 7pm for a 16+ show.

The importance of Sarcófago goes well beyond the size of the rooms they historically played. Formed in Belo Horizonte in 1985 by Wagner Lamounier after his departure from the early Sepultura line-up, the band helped push Brazilian metal towards something faster, rougher and more confrontational at a point when the country’s underground scene was still taking shape.

Sarcófago Newcastle revisits a genuinely formative catalogue

The Cluny 2 date puts Sarcófago’s early death-metal and black-metal influence into one of Newcastle’s most intimate rooms, decades after records such as I.N.R.I. and Rotting became reference points for extreme metal far beyond Brazil. That historical weight gives the show a different feel from a standard reunion or nostalgia booking.

I.N.R.I., released in 1987, arrived with a sound and visual identity that deliberately rejected many of the conventions around the metal scene at the time. Sarcófago mixed death metal with punk attitude and imagery that would later be echoed across black metal, while 1989’s Rotting sharpened the attack and brought the band wider international attention.

Cluny 2 should make that history feel particularly physical. The room is small enough that the speed and volume will land at close range, while the stripped-back setup suits music that was never built around polish or spectacle in the first place.

Damim add a current UK extreme-metal edge to the bill. Their recent work continues a partnership with producer Neil Kernon and mastering engineer Alan Douches, while a new full-length record is due in 2026. That makes the support slot more than an arbitrary warm-up and gives the night a useful link between an influential older band and a contemporary act still developing its own heavier direction.
