Amphitrio at The Forum Darlington brings contemporary jazz from Bucharest to Borough Road on Thursday 1 October 2026. Formed in 2023, the trio is made up of pianist and composer Andrei Petrache, bassist Mike Alex and percussionist Philip Goron, with a sound that moves between modern jazz, classical precision and more experimental ideas.
The three musicians place improvisation and interaction at the centre of the project, which should make the small-room setting at The Forum a good fit. Rather than building the set around familiar standards alone, Amphitrio’s work is tied closely to original composition and the chemistry between piano, bass and percussion.

Since forming, the group have released three albums and taken the project beyond Romania through international performances. Their work has also picked up recognition in competitions and awards during 2023 and 2025, while the band’s live identity continues to centre on the freedom of a trio format.
The Darlington show is seated. Doors open at 7.30pm and the performance is expected to begin at 8pm. Tickets are £8, while the event is 16+ and under-18s must attend with an adult.
At a time when a lot of The Forum’s autumn calendar leans towards rock, punk and tribute nights, Amphitrio gives the programme a very different shape for an evening. The combination of acoustic instruments, contemporary writing and room for improvisation should work especially well for listeners who want something exploratory without losing melody or structure.
It is also one of the more affordable ticketed shows in the current programme, so anyone curious about contemporary European jazz can take a chance on the trio without the price tag of a larger concert hall.
