Annis Rallis and her North East roots
Annis Rallis is a British-Greek singer-songwriter, guitarist and ukuleleist originally from the North East of England. Her music brings together pop, country and Mediterranean touches, with the Greek side of her family feeding directly into the way she writes and presents her original material.
Before concentrating on her own songs, Rallis built a professional career in theatre. Her stage work has included productions such as Dirty Dancing, Rock of Ages, Berlin Berlin, West Side Story and Jim Steinman’s Dance of the Vampires, with performances across the UK, Europe and Australia. That background gives her live shows a strong performance instinct, but her current work is focused much more firmly on her own voice as a songwriter.
From Éna Astéri to Eyes Wide Open
Rallis’ original releases include debut single Éna Astéri and follow-up Fake Love, both of which received BBC Introducing North East support. The songs show two sides of her writing, from the Mediterranean influence and personal heritage behind Éna Astéri to the country-rock edge of Fake Love.
That development led into her debut EP, Eyes Wide Open. The three-track release became the focus of a full-band launch at The Forum Music Centre in Darlington, with North East support and a strong emphasis on the local creative community around the show. The artwork also carries a family connection, having been painted by Rallis’ Greek grandmother.
Annis Rallis live in the North East
Since returning to the region, Rallis has appeared regularly across North East venues, including acoustic shows in Newcastle as well as the Darlington EP launch. Her sets mix original songs with a broad range of live influences, while the songwriting increasingly gives her a clearer identity away from the theatre work that first took her around the world.
For SoundBite North East, that makes Annis Rallis a particularly interesting local artist to follow. The combination of North East roots, Greek heritage and years of professional stage experience gives her a different starting point from many singer-songwriters coming through the regional circuit.
Tickets and official information for the Eyes Wide Open launch are available from The Forum Music Centre. Details were correct at the time of writing, so check the artist and venue channels for current releases and live dates.
