Berry Hagman is a Sunderland-based folk musician whose songs bring traditional folk influences into direct, modern storytelling. His writing is closely tied to the North East, drawing on regional life, identity and everyday experience rather than treating folk as something preserved at a distance.
The songs tend to work through voice, acoustic instrumentation and strong narrative detail, giving Hagman’s music a raw, lived-in quality. There is room for humour and warmth alongside heavier subjects, with the North East setting often doing more than simply providing a backdrop.
Hagman has built his reputation through grassroots shows, headline dates and festival appearances around the region. His live work keeps the songs close to the audience, where the storytelling and local detail can come through without needing a large production around them.
