Kenickie were an indie band formed in Sunderland in the mid-1990s, combining punk energy with sharp pop hooks and a deliberately rough-edged sense of humour. The group became one of the city’s most recognisable alternative acts of the era and remain an important part of Sunderland’s modern music history.
Their music stood out for the way it balanced noisy guitars with bright melodies and a strong sense of personality. That mix helped Kenickie connect with a wider national audience without losing the identity of a band that had clearly come from Sunderland’s own scene.
The group’s contribution has continued to be recognised locally, including through Sunderland’s Music Wall of Fame. Their influence can still be felt in the city’s later generations of independent and alternative artists.
