Andy Champion

Andy Champion is a North East bassist, composer and improviser whose work stretches from contemporary jazz into free improvisation and experimental music. Whether playing solo or as part of a larger ensemble, his approach puts rhythm, texture and interaction ahead of easy genre boundaries.

Champion has been a prominent figure in the region’s jazz community for years, working across Newcastle and beyond with a wide range of musicians. His double-bass playing can be both forceful and spacious, moving between tightly structured material and performances where the shape of the music develops in real time.

Recent North East appearances include a Globe show alongside Eternal Triangle and a Durham Jazz Festival performance with Zoe Gilby. Those collaborations reflect the breadth of his work: rooted in jazz, but always open to the possibilities of improvisation and the character of the musicians sharing the stage.
