John Pope Quintet is a Newcastle-connected contemporary jazz group led by bassist and composer John Pope. The music draws on hard bop, free improvisation and more adventurous modern jazz, balancing tightly written themes with enough space for the players to push against the structure.
Pope has been a long-standing part of the North East jazz and improvised-music community, and the quintet reflects that network of musicians and collaborators. The group’s sound is energetic without being showy, with the bass often acting as both anchor and launch point for the improvisation around it.
Live performance is central to the project. A September 2026 show at The Cumberland Arms with Urvashi places the quintet in one of Newcastle’s most intimate grassroots rooms, where the conversation between the players can come through just as clearly as the written material.
