Dean Parker and his North East roots

Dean Parker is a Newcastle-based songwriter, guitarist, producer and composer whose solo music brings together folk rock, alt-Americana and alternative songwriting. Born and raised in North East England, Parker spent years working as a guitarist and session musician before stepping forward with his own songs. That experience shows in the detail of the arrangements: the guitar work is expressive without becoming showy, while the lyrics tend to focus on uncertainty, relationships and the things people are still trying to work out long after they are supposed to have the answers.

His influences include Jason Isbell, Jeff Buckley and Jackson Browne, but Parker’s writing has its own North East grit. From sideman to solo songwriter

Parker’s solo career properly began in 2022 with the EP This All Tastes Like Yesterday. The five-track release marked a shift from working behind other artists to putting his own voice and lyrics at the centre. Within the first year of that project he was already taking the band overseas, playing dates in the United States including Austin and Memphis before returning for further UK shows.

His second EP, Is this Learning?, arrived in 2024 and pushed the writing further. Parker described the record as a collection of songs built around questions he was still trying to answer, and that uncertainty gives the EP much of its character. Tracks including The Death Of A Certain Kind Of Life, Head, Yes Love, Forever, Clean, Cheap Wine and Reprise balance vulnerability with increasingly confident production. Richard E. Alongside his own records, Parker continues to work across production, guitar sessions and music education. He is connected with Core Music in Hexham and has experience ranging from touring to musical direction, studio work and theatre performance. That broader musical life feeds back into the solo project, where the songs benefit from someone who understands both the technical and emotional sides of making a record.
