Phantom Bagman are a North East indie-jazz group who bring jazz musicianship together with the immediacy of indie rock, funk and soul. Formed by university friends, the project grew into a seven-piece ensemble with enough range to move between groove-led sections, brass-heavy arrangements and more melodic guitar moments.
The line-up includes Siena Anderson on vocals, Ben Tattersall and Dom Purefoy on trumpets, Luke Carey on guitar, Matty Turnbull on piano, Jamie Watkins on bass and Matt Brown on drums. That instrumentation gives the band a fuller palette than a standard guitar group without losing a clear song-first approach.
Live activity has been central to their development, with Newcastle venues including Pilgrim, The Globe and Little Buildings all featuring in their recent schedule. A BBC Introducing appearance at The Glasshouse marked a step up in profile, while headline and showcase slots have kept the band closely connected to the city’s grassroots scene.
