Martin Stephenson & The Daintees Return to Wylam Brewery

Martin Stephenson Newcastle returns to Wylam Brewery with The Daintees on Thursday 4 March 2027, bringing one of the North East’s longest-running independent bands back to a major home-region stage. Doors open at 7pm for the 18+ show, with a special guest also due to appear.

This date carries a stronger local connection than most touring stops on Wylam’s calendar. The Wylam show brings a North East band back to a major hometown room with Gladsome, Humour & Blue forming part of the set alongside wider Daintees favourites. It places songs written across more than four decades back in front of an audience close to where the story began.

Martin Stephenson & The Daintees emerged from the North East in the early 1980s, releasing debut single Roll On Summertime through Newcastle’s Kitchenware Records in 1982. The label would also become closely associated with Prefab Sprout, The Kane Gang and Hurrah!, making the Daintees part of a distinctive period in the region’s independent music history.

Debut album Boat to Bolivia followed in the mid-1980s and helped take the band onto national television through appearances on The Tube and Whistle Test. Second album Gladsome, Humour & Blue arrived in 1988, including There Comes a Time and Wholly Humble Heart.

The 2027 Wylam date draws directly on that second record while leaving space for other classics and fan favourites. That balance should make the show work for people who followed the band from the Kitchenware years as well as listeners who found Stephenson’s songwriting later.

There is also something fitting about the Palace of Arts hosting the group. Wylam has become one of Newcastle’s larger independent music rooms, so a Daintees show there connects an older strand of North East independent music with a venue now central to the current live circuit.
