The Newcastle show puts Café Bleu at the centre of the night, with the nine-piece band recreating The Style Council’s debut album alongside the singles that followed. That means the set can explore the jazz, soul and pop ideas that made the record feel so different from Paul Weller’s previous work with The Jam.
The Style Councillors were formed in 2013 by Darren Fletcher and have built their live reputation around the music Weller made with Mick Talbot during the 1980s. The full nine-piece line-up matters here because The Style Council records often depended on keyboards, brass, backing vocals and rhythm arrangements that need more than a basic guitar-band setup.
Café Bleu also gives the tour a useful narrative. Songs such as My Ever Changing Moods can sit inside the album that originally framed them, while later favourites including Shout to the Top, Walls Come Tumbling Down and You’re the Best Thing can broaden the second part of the show.
Wylam Brewery should suit the scale of the production. The Palace of Arts has room for a nine-piece band to spread out, but the standing floor keeps the atmosphere closer to a club show than a seated theatre tribute.
The appeal here is the chance to hear a specific record rebuilt with enough musicians to capture its detail. For Style Council fans, that is more interesting than simply moving through the obvious singles in chronological order.
