Mathew Jonson Brings a Rare Live Set to Cobalt Studios
Mathew Jonson brings a rare live electronic set to Cobalt Studios Newcastle on 26 September, joined by Cousin Dan from 11pm.

Mathew Jonson Cobalt Studios arrives on Saturday 26 September 2026 for a rare live electronic set in Newcastle, with Cousin Dan also on the bill. The late session begins at 11pm, following Cobalt’s earlier Some Like It Early party in the same venue.
Jonson has spent more than two decades building a sound around hardware, improvisation and melodic electronic music. His catalogue moves through minimal techno, house, ambient and breakbeat ideas, but the important distinction here is that this is billed as a live performance rather than a conventional DJ set.
Mathew Jonson Cobalt Studios brings hardware live to Newcastle
That live approach has long been central to Jonson’s identity. Tracks including Marionette and Typerope helped establish him as a producer with a recognisable melodic touch, while his performances are shaped in real time through synthesisers, drum machines and other hardware. It means the Newcastle set should develop as its own performance rather than simply reproducing recorded versions of familiar tracks.
Cobalt is particularly suited to that kind of detail. The Ouseburn room is compact enough for subtle changes in rhythm and texture to matter, but it also has the sound system needed for the heavier low-end moments to land properly. A 11pm start gives the night a clear club focus, while Cousin Dan adds a local connection to the bill and another experienced selector around the headline set.
For anyone who follows the deeper end of house and techno, this is one of the more unusual electronic bookings in Newcastle’s autumn calendar. Jonson does not build his reputation around quick festival appearances or predictable sets. Instead, the draw is hearing an artist with a long production history shape the music in the room as the night unfolds.
The date also creates an interesting double-header at Cobalt. Nonna Fab and Calvin Murta occupy the early session from 7pm, before the venue resets for Mathew Jonson and Cousin Dan later on. Separate tickets apply, so check the correct event before booking.
Check the artist and venue channels before travelling for any late changes to entry times or running order.
