A Different Thread Newcastle brings the North Carolina-based transatlantic Americana outfit to Cluny 2 on Sunday 4 October 2026, with local support from Driven Serious. The show forms part of A Different Thread’s 20-date UK Over Again album release tour and sees the band return to Newcastle with a record that has already picked up international recognition.

Songwriters Alicia Best, from Durham, North Carolina, and Midlands-born Robert Jackson first met while busking on the streets of Ireland. That chance meeting developed into a musical partnership built around close harmonies and a blend of British folk-rock and North Carolina alt-country. Their arrangements bring together acoustic guitar, fiddle, harmonica and a suitcase drum kit, moving from quieter storytelling to more energetic, foot-stomping sections.
A Different Thread Newcastle show arrives on the Over Again tour
The Newcastle date has more behind it than another stop on the calendar. Over Again is A Different Thread’s third record, while its title track recently won the folk/Americana category at the International Acoustic Music Awards. The album follows a strong period for the group, including international touring and support slots with The Milk Carton Kids and Jody Stephens of Big Star.
The pair’s story feeds naturally into their songwriting. Having spent years touring internationally while dealing with visas and periods living on different continents, themes of wanderlust, resilience, hope and social issues run through their work. That gives the Cluny 2 show an interesting meeting point between the duo’s transatlantic background and a new album being taken around the UK on a substantial 20-date release tour.
Driven Serious add a North East connection at Cluny 2
Support comes from Newcastle and Durham-based Driven Serious, but this won’t be a standard full-band appearance. Frontman and songwriter Rob Jones will be joined by fiddle player Sol Sayal for a rare stripped-back duo performance.
Driven Serious have been playing around the North East and further afield since 2011, developing a folk-punk and folk-rock sound known for its energy. Hearing Jones and Sayal reduce that material to voice, songwriting and fiddle should make the support set a genuine part of the bill rather than simply a warm-up, while also giving the night a strong local connection.
The pairing makes sense musically too. Both acts work with folk traditions without treating them as something fixed, with A Different Thread pulling Americana and alt-country into the mix while Driven Serious approach the form from a more punk-rooted direction.
