Altered Images Bring Happy Birthday to The Grove Newcastle
Altered Images bring their Happy Birthday album show to The Grove Newcastle on 16 September 2026, with doors at 7pm.

Altered Images The Grove Newcastle brings one of Scotland’s best-known new wave names to St Michael’s Road on Wednesday 16 September 2026, with doors at 7pm. The show centres on the band’s breakthrough album Happy Birthday, giving Clare Grogan and the current Altered Images line-up a chance to revisit the record that pushed them firmly into the UK pop conversation.
Released in 1981, Happy Birthday mixed bright pop hooks with the sharper edges of the post-punk scene Altered Images had grown out of. Its title track became their biggest early hit, while the band went on to build a catalogue that also includes I Could Be Happy, See Those Eyes and Don’t Talk to Me About Love. The Newcastle date arrives as part of a run that keeps that history in focus without treating the band as a museum piece.
Altered Images The Grove Newcastle revisits a defining album
Playing a record with this much recognition gives the night an obvious centre, but The Grove should keep things intimate. Its 350-capacity setting is very different from the larger rooms Altered Images have played across their career, and that smaller scale should suit material built around short, immediate pop songs and a frontperson who has always connected through personality as much as polish.
For anyone who discovered the band during their original early-eighties run, the show offers a direct route back to the songs that made Altered Images such a distinctive part of that period. However, the current version of the band has also released new music in recent years, including the 2022 album Mascara Streakz, so the story did not end with the original records.
The Grove date lands right at the start of a packed autumn programme for the Newcastle venue. With doors at 7pm, it is worth arriving in time for the full show rather than treating this as a late-night nostalgia booking.
Check Altered Images and The Grove channels before travelling for any late changes to timings or entry requirements.
More Newcastle dates are listed in SoundBite North East’s Upcoming Gigs, while the rest of the programme is available on our The Grove Newcastle page.
