Amateur Ornithologist is the North East art-pop project led by songwriter Daniel Clifford, combining bright indie-pop melodies with orchestral colour, layered harmonies and a deliberately off-centre sense of arrangement.
The project has grown from Clifford’s solo writing into a fuller ensemble sound, drawing comparisons with artists such as Talking Heads, The Beach Boys and Prefab Sprout without settling neatly into any one of those reference points. Releases including Hide, The Haunted Life of Architecture and 2026 single Decoupage show that mix of pop instinct and more adventurous instrumentation.
Amateur Ornithologist’s recent work has also pushed further into richly arranged ensemble material, with strings, brass, saxophone, keys and layered vocals sitting alongside the core rhythm section. That gives the songs a playful, colourful character while keeping Clifford’s songwriting at the centre.
