American Wrestling are a three-piece alternative-rock band from South Shields who describe their own sound as “loser-rock”. There is a dry sense of humour running through the project, but the music itself is anything but throwaway, built around a surprisingly big guitar sound for such a stripped-back line-up.
The trio came together after years spent playing in different bands, bringing those separate experiences into a project that feels deliberately less polished and more instinctive. Their songs often start from books, home demos and rough ideas before being shaped collectively in the rehearsal room.
That approach gives American Wrestling a loose, characterful edge on stage as well as on record, with the band leaning into the tension between self-deprecation, melody and heavier alternative-rock textures.
