Goodnight Kid and their North East roots
Goodnight Kid are an alt-emo-rock band from the North East of England, bringing together a love of early-2000s alternative music with a modern melodic edge. The project began during lockdown in 2020, when the first songs were put together remotely. That starting point shaped a sound that leans into pop-punk energy, mid-western emo textures and emotionally direct songwriting without simply copying the era that inspired them.
The band features Jackson Vert, Khyle Fryer, Rhys Melhuish and John Thorp, musicians with links to other alternative projects including Club Paradise, Ghost Signals, Ivy Sky and St. Buryan. That background gives Goodnight Kid a broader palette than a straight pop-punk revival. Their songs move between punchy guitars, open-hearted choruses and quieter moments that let the lyrics breathe, while the live setup is built to give those contrasts more weight.
Building a sound beyond nostalgia
Goodnight Kid’s early material has helped establish the group as one of the more interesting new names coming through the North East alternative circuit. Their debut single, House (With A Balcony), arrived in 2025 and was followed by further releases including Rabbit and the Happy Like This EP. Together, those tracks show a band interested in the emotional pull of emo as much as the bigger hooks of pop-punk.
There is a clear sense of nostalgia in the music, but the band use it as a foundation rather than an endpoint. The guitars are bright and immediate, the choruses are built for live rooms and the lyrics often sit in that uncomfortable space between reflection and release. That combination has helped Goodnight Kid fit naturally alongside the current wave of North East rock and alternative acts rather than feeling like a throwback project.
Goodnight Kid on the North East live circuit
SoundBite North East has featured Goodnight Kid through local festival coverage, including Veritas Festival at Anarchy Brew Co. in Newcastle. Those appearances place them firmly within the region’s grassroots network of venues, promoters and emerging bands. With a growing catalogue and a line-up drawn from established local musicians, Goodnight Kid are well positioned to keep developing their identity across the North East and further afield.
